ARARAT - The Ararat YMCA basketball competition has wrapped up its first semester's season with some thrilling grand final contests.

There was some terrific basketball played, with very few games decided by more than a few points.

Large crowds were in attendance for all games, creating a great atmosphere inside the stadium.

In the men's game Hummingbirds overcame the height advantage held by Phoenix Allstars to win by a narrow four points.

In doing so they also denied Phoenix Allstars their third successive grand final win.

Hummingbirds hopped out to an early lead, using their running game to advantage.

Phoenix Allstars were never going to lie down, and managed to slow the game down playing a wide three-two zone.

Back to back three pointers to the dangerous Rohan May saw Phoenix grab the lead by a solitary point halfway through the second half, but this was the only time they would lead, Hummingbirds hitting back before sealing the game from the free-throw line.

Guard Alan Batchelor was a livewire for Hummingbirds and was awarded the most valuable player on the night.

In the women's game, the red-hot favourite Ararat SS were toppled by a tall Rats outfit.

Boasting plenty of young talent, including the skilful Williamson twins, Ararat SS have been the team to beat all season, using their running and gunning style to great effect.

They jumped out to an early lead on Wednesday night, with Rats unable to make the most of good scoring opportunities from around the basket.

Tahnee Waterston kept Rats in the game almost single-handedly in offence, shooting a high percentage from outside the arc.

Ararat SS held a slender lead at half time, but Rats came out firing in the second half and their inside presence began to be a real factor.

Megan Shea got plenty of the ball inside the key and used her height to create easy points for the Rats around the ring as well as score plenty of her own.

Ararat SS were unable to get anything going offensively with the taller Rats' defenders closing out lots of shots and eventually running out 17 point winners.

Megan Shea from Rats was named most valuable player for her dominant inside game.
