ARARAT - The Ararat Eagles will tomorrow attempt to invoke a sense of deja vu on Lexton, when they clash in the Lexton Plains Football League.
When the teams met last in round eight it was the Eagles who were victorious, famously breaking their 39 game losing streak and sparking mass celebrations around the club.
Five rounds on and the Eagles are yet to post another victory, although they have shown plenty of promising signs since their drought breaking win.
Lexton have won two of their last five matches, however, they head into this match on the back of an 118 point thrashing at the hands of ladder leader Rokewood-Corindhap.
All this points to an interesting contest, as Lexton strives for September action and the Eagles put their pride on the line, determined not to lose in front of a home crowd.
The Eagles may be without the services of Lincoln Belcher who injured a hamstring last week, while they may also miss some of their under 17 stars.
With the finals looming large the under 17s will be keen to settle their line-up and not risk injury playing in the seniors.
This opens the door for Scott Jackson who has shown promising form in the reserves of late, while the Eagles will also welcome back crafty rover Richard Lendon-Moyle.
Lexton has welcomed back ruckman Nigel Reid into its line up since last time the teams met, and following a three goal best on ground performance last week, he should have an intriguing battle with mountain man Craig Cooper.
Lexton has plenty to play for, with its finals aspirations far from finished just yet.
The Tigers can jump as high as fourth with a win this weekend and will be keen to consolidate a place in the five over fellow contenders Illabarook and Navarre.
People associated with the Tigers have labelled their loss to the Eagles earlier in the season as `the most embarrassing loss we have ever had', signalling that the Tigers will be fired up and desperate for victory this time around.
Much of their hopes will rest with key onballer Eamon Johnson. The interleague representative always finds plenty of the ball and will need some close attention from Doc O'Connell if the Eagles want the points.
Senior coach Brett Sladdin said the Eagles were able to pressure the ball carrier effectively during the previous clash.
"We were able to limit their time and space, not allowing them to deliver it lace out,'' Sladdin said.
"We also had plenty of run which will be vital this week on the bigger ground.''
The game may very well be run and won in the midfield as both ruckmen will be hard pressed getting on top of the other.
"It will also be important for our onballers to keep rotating so they can run out the game,'' Sladdin said.
"If they can do that it will be up to our forwards to give us an avenue to goal and then kick a winning score.''
Brent Bulger found form in front of the big sticks last week booting five and if he can team well with Sam O'Connell the Eagles will be in with a big chance.
The larger ground at Alexandra Oval seems to swing the game in the Eagles' favour, particularly at back half.
Facing an ageing Lexton forward line, the young Eagles will look to exploit their opponents and run off at every opportunity.
With no player over 23 and catalysts Jamie Elder and Sam Seres leading the charge, the Eagles' back half should be able to set up plenty of attacking forays for the home team, something that will get them over the line in a top contest.
